Ultimate Pegs and Jokers
Ultimate Pegs is a faithful digital recreation of the beloved board game, which combines the strategy of Chess with the luck-of-the-draw of card games. The objective is simple: be the first team to race all of your pegs from your "Home" base, around the board, and into the safety of your "Safe" zone. Using cards from a standard deck (plus Jokers!), players move their pegs, "bonk" opponents to send them back to the start, and strategically use special cards like the all-powerful Joker to swap positions on the board. The game is best played in teams, where coordination and partnership are the keys to victory.

The problem
Pegs and Jokers is a beloved family board game — part chess strategy, part card-draw luck — but it only works when everyone's around the same table with the physical board. Ultimate Pegs set out to bring that experience online faithfully, so partners can play their favorite team game together no matter where they are, without losing the rules and rituals fans already love.
The build
Built with Next.js, React, and Tailwind CSS, the game runs on Firebase Firestore for smooth real-time multiplayer and secure Google/email authentication. A lobby system handles shareable invite links and team arrangement before a match starts, and AI fills the gaps: smart bots take empty seats so a game can start anytime, and a game-strategist AI offers move suggestions when a player is stuck. Customizable rule variations (splitting 7s, backward 8s) preserve the house rules different groups play by.
Meet Sir Reginald Pegsworth
The face of our game is the debonair and slightly mischievous Sir Reginald Pegsworth, the Joker himself. Legend has it that Sir Reginald was once a humble peg, dutifully marching around the board like any other. But after a particularly brilliant move involving a clever backwards jump and a triple-bonk, he was granted the honorary title of Joker by the “Board of Elders.”
No longer bound to a single color or team, he now roams the board as a free agent, a master of chaos and opportunity. His iconic top hat and monocle are said to be trophies from a high-stakes game against a team of misguided chess pawns. He embodies the spirit of the game: a perfect blend of distinguished strategy and playful unpredictability. His image on the Joker card is a reminder that in Ultimate Pegs, one clever move can change everything.

How to Play
- Objective: Be the first team to get all of your pegs from your Home area into your Safe zone.
- Get Out of Home: Use an Ace, King, Queen, or Jack to move a peg from your Home to your “Come Out” spot on the main track.
- Move Your Pegs: Play cards from your hand to move your pegs forward. The card’s rank determines the number of spaces you can move (e.g., a ‘5’ moves 5 spaces).
- Bonk Opponents: If your move ends on a space occupied by an opponent’s peg, their peg is “bonked” and sent back to their Home.
- The Joker: The Joker is the ultimate card! Use it to swap one of your pegs (from Home or the track) with any opponent’s peg on the main track.
- Teamwork: Once all your pegs are in the Safe zone, you can use your cards to move your teammate’s pegs.
The outcome
The game delivers faithful 2v2 team play online with all the special moves — Aces, Jacks, Eights, and the position-swapping Joker — intact. Real-time multiplayer, in-game chat, a spectator mode, and AI bots mean a full game can come together on demand, whether or not four humans are available.
